For the next couple of weeks, our focus in math will be exploring, sorting, and building with 2-Dimensional shapes. Students will identify 2-D shapes by the number of sides or corners they have and sort them according to their attributes. They will also be looking for objects in the environment that are these shapes (e.g., stop sign is an octagon, an egg is an oval, a clock is a circle).
The following are a list of shapes we will be exploring in class:
- Triangle
- Square
- Pentagon
- Hexagon
- Octagon
- Rectangle
- Oval
- Diamond
Try these activities with your child to extend their learning:
1. Place all the shapes in a bag, and have your child give you clues about the one they choose. You will need to guess what shape they are holding based on the clues they provided.
2. Shape memory game (have students identify what shapes they have matched)
3. Ask your child to describe shapes (e.g., looks like a clock, the number of sides and corners it has, etc...)
4. Pick 2 shapes and ask your child to explain how the shapes are similar or different
5. Challenge your child to sort shapes into groups, then try sorting them a different way
6. Describe an object in the room and ask your child to guess the object (e.g., I see a circle, it has no corners and one curved side, I use this to tell time. What is it?)
I hope you enjoy exploring 2-D shapes with your child. Thank you for your assistance.
